Founder & Creative Director

Conceived, launched, and scaled a direct-to-consumer women's ready-to-wear brand from the ground up — owning brand identity, product design, and go-to-market strategy, grounded in a deep understanding of the customer.

Overview

Role: Founder & Creative Director Focus: Brand identity, product design, art direction, DTC ecommerce

In 2020, I set out to build a brand from nothing — not just a product, but a full creative vision: name, visual identity, product line, and voice, all built around a clear point of view.

Thoughtless was a women's ready-to-wear brand offering elevated, timeless essentials that embraced rather than reshaped the body. From concept through five years of operation, I owned every creative and strategic decision. The brand grew significantly — 151% revenue growth year over year, 500% subscriber growth, press coverage in ELLE and The Cut — before I closed it intentionally to return to design full time.

The Opportunity

The women's ready-to-wear market had a clear gap: premium basics existed, but they were expensive and exclusionary. Affordable basics existed, but compromised on fabric, fit, and craft. And across both tiers, the same narrow body standard shaped almost every design decision.

Conversations with women across ages, body types, and lifestyles confirmed it; the same frustration came up again and again: clothing that asked them to adapt to it, instead of the other way around. That gap became the brand's founding premise.

Brand & Creative Direction

Thoughtless needed to feel like the opposite of what it was pushing back against — effortless, considered, and honest.

I developed the name, visual identity, and tone of voice from the ground up, built around one idea: getting dressed shouldn't require overthinking. The visual language stayed clean and quietly confident — never precious, never over-styled — carried consistently across the website, packaging, and social presence.

Photography was the clearest expression of the brand's point of view. Every shoot was unretouched, cast across a genuine range of body types, ages, and ethnicities — not as a marketing layer, but as the most direct proof of what the brand stood for. I directed three photoshoots and produced a digital lookbook that

“I would love to see hip dips, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, back rolls...just normal, natural looking women with real bodies..”

— Ashley T.

Bringing It to Life

Design and construction decisions came directly out of what I knew the brand needed to deliver on. I sketched an initial capsule collection of elevated basics, then worked closely with pattern makers through five to six sample iterations per piece, fit-testing across body types at each round — because size range without construction that actually adapted to different bodies wasn't the point.

On the production side, I sourced and vetted a dozen-plus manufacturers, evaluating fabric performance across 15+ swatches for durability, shrinkage, and pilling before selecting two partners who could deliver consistent quality at an accessible price. I also designed and built the ecommerce experience — navigation, photography direction, and copy — so the digital storefront matched the same standard as the product itself.

Go-to-Market

I ran a competitive analysis across five-plus brands to sharpen positioning, then built a launch strategy combining organic content, targeted campaigns, and influencer collaborations. With limited resources, I had to be precise about where creative and marketing investment actually mattered — a discipline that shaped every campaign decision afterward.

Press Recognition

"Everyone needs good basics in their closets; and Thoughtless has them."— THE CUT

Reflections

Building Thoughtless was the most demanding creative project of my career — and the most instructive.

Running a brand end-to-end taught me things you can't learn any other way: how to make an irreversible call under real constraints, how to hold a creative vision together across every touchpoint a customer sees, and how to know when a decision is worth defending versus when it's worth revisiting. When my initial manufacturer couldn't provide transparency around labor practices, I pivoted suppliers at real cost to the timeline — because it wasn't a decision the brand's values left room to compromise on.

I also learned something about language and perception. I named the brand Thoughtless to signal ease — the feeling of getting dressed without overthinking it. In retrospect, I underestimated how a word that felt liberating in concept could read as ambiguous, or even negative, once it left the room it was conceived in. It's a lesson in staying rigorous about how creative decisions land with a real audience, not just how they feel internally.

I closed the brand in 2025 to return to design full time — a deliberate choice, not a retreat. Five years of building and defending a creative vision at every level, from concept to shelf, made me a sharper creative lead and a far more fluent collaborator with business stakeholders.
